This past week a group of MUSC students, myself included, traveled to Chicago, IL to represent our school at ASDA’s annual National Leadership Conference. We left Charleston at 6am with a forecast of clear sky’s and 80 degrees temperature only to be welcomed in the windy city with what us southerners would call a blizzard. Snow falling and winds so strong we couldn’t life our faces up. Our first day in the city was spent beating the cold, pretending to be a local at Billy Goat’s Tavern, and shopping magnificent mile for last minute Halloween costume accessories.
This year South Carolina ASDA hosted their first Wellness Week from September 23rd – 27th! A week devoted to nutritional, physical, mental, and occupational wellness. We started off the week by greeting the student body with coffee and granola bars on Monday morning. Everyone was cheerier after this treat!
Tuesday, we were fortunate to hear from Abigail King, MS, CNS. She gave a very informative presentation on functional nutrition with a focus on gut health. She happily answered all of our questions!
Thursday, we shifted our focus to occupational wellness! We hosted seven Light and Loupe vendors at our...

On January 13th and 14th, several classmates and I attended the District 4 ASDA conference in Asheville, North Carolina. There were many informative speakers who gave us insight into life after dental school and ways to succeed in this profession. A few of the things we enjoyed and learned include:
Networking with dental corporations, vendors and students from other schools
Educational information from breakout sessions, such as how to tackle boards
The way dentistry is evolving as a profession due to advancements in technology
This past week, 4 MUSC students, including myself, traveled to Chicago, IL for ASDA’s National Leadership Conference! Although the 3:30 am wake up call was less than ideal, we made it to the Windy City before 7am leaving a whole day to explore the city! Christmas decorations were just starting to be put up, so we walked down Michigan Avenue to see “The Bean” and to get a view from the 95th floor of the John Hancock Building.
Friday was the official start to the conference and the fun didn't stop until Sunday afternoon. Each day started with a general session where we heard empowering stories about what...
Four years ago, I was an undergraduate student attending a Pre-Dental Day event at MUSC. Today, I had the privilege of planning Pre-Dental Day as a third year dental student. To say that the process of applying to dental school can be overwhelming is an understatement. You stress about having a perfect GPA, knowing which pre-requisites to take, what study materials to use for the DAT, how to stand out during interviews, and the list goes on and on. To be able to help ease the stress of pre-dental students who were once in your very same shoes, and to help them through the overwhelming process of applyi...
What a weekend in Richmond, VA! I learned so much about the structure of the ADA, the policies that are currently being discussed, and met many incredible dentists from our district. The ADA is divided into 17 districts, and South Carolina falls in the 16th along with North Carolina and Virginia. Each year before the ADA Annual Meeting, the delegates and alternates from SC, NC, and VA meet to discuss current resolutions that will be voted upon. They also build relationships with each other, which makes our district one of the strongest. Finally, they hear from each the candidates running for ADA Presid...
FINALLY, we were able to make the 211 mile trip up to Clemson to talk to the Pre-Dental Club and Alpha Epsilon Delta! Two weeks into the fall semester, between the opening Kent State and Auburn football games, we had over 20 students come out to hear about dental school admissions and life as a dental student.

Differences in work load between college and dental school (Best way I’ve heard it described? It’s like drinking water out of a fire hydrant.)
They say that Disney World is the “Happiest Place on Earth,” but after a week at the ASDA Annual Session in Orlando, Florida, I may have to challenge that slogan. This year’s ASDA Annual Session was truly magical. Dental students from all over the country convened to vote on our 2017-2018 National ASDA leaders, vote on legislation in our House of Delegates meeting, and learn about our awesome profession. Eight students from MUSC represented our school at this conference and also used this week to gain insight into our profession. We also were able to glean new ideas from other chapters in order to help...
