The annual ASDA District 4 meeting was held this past weekend on January 9th and 10th in Greenville, SC. ASDA District 4 consists of dental colleges from MUSC, U of Tennessee, U of Virginia, East Carolina, UNC, Georgia Regents and Meharry. This year marked a record attendance of over 130 students from these schools. MUSC ASDA was able to send 13 students to the event (11 Executive Council (EC) members and 2 non-EC members).
This years meeting was filled with informative sessions ranging from “How Legislation Affects Dentistry” to “Licensure and Ethics”. Our own Daniel Hall and Andrew Ponton facilitated a breakout session on Social Media and Website Design. Dr. Glenn Miller and Dr. Ralph Howell were the featured keynote speakers and spoke to the students on the importance of “Staying Active in Dentistry” and “Why We Need Organized Dentistry”.
In addition to the ASDA business there was also philanthropy and fun. As a service project, the organizers of the district meeting chose Better World Books, a company that sells donated books and gives proceeds to literacy programs around the world. We are happy to report that hundreds of books were collected. And as a wrap up to the weekend a reception was given by Henry Schein at Ford’s Oyster Bar on the scenic Reedy River.
It is safe to say that despite the extreme cold, a good time was had by all. We would like to say a special thank you to Jeremy Jordon the District 4 Trustee that worked tirelessly to put together such a great event. We look forward to seeing everyone again at our yearly national meeting, ASDA Annual Session, in Boston. If you want any more information on MUSC ASDA, our meetings, how you can attend one, or how you can get more involved in other events, please talk to an EC member in your class. Remember that all MUSC students are ASDA members and we, the EC, were elected to serve you.
