ASDA's Pre-Dental Day

On Saturday, October 22, 2016, MUSC ASDA hosted its annual Pre-Dental Day. Overall, we had tremendous pre-dental student attendance (39 students total) and diverse representation from schools across the district, including College of Charleston, South Carolina, Clemson, Wofford, Furman, University of Georgia, East Carolina, University of North Carolina, and Radford - just to name a few! The day started with check-in and a delicious breakfast catered by Chick-fil-a followed by an informative presentation from Dr. Vuthiganon about the profession of dentistry, the admissions process, and the College of Dental Medicine at MUSC. Then, Emily introduced the students to ASDA, the focus of national ASDA and our local chapter, and the importance of organized dentistry. Organized dentistry has greatly impacted our dental school experience and we merely wanted to give the students a glimpse of what ASDA has to offer! Following a lecture on dental caries by one of our awesome professors, Dr. Mennito, the students divided into small groups with current MUSC students to ask questions and tour the campus before eating lunch over-looking downtown Charleston. During the afternoon, we entered the SimLab for some hands-on activities! Students started prepping a pre-molar for a Class I amalgam restoration and waxing #8 for comparison using CAD-CAM technology. We guided them through each step as they sought the “ideal” prep and wax-up. To see the excitement and enthusiasm these students displayed during the lab session was truly remarkable! We had a blast spending our day with them and joining them on their journey to dental school and beyond!
